I’m consultant at DEMOS Helsinki, an independent think tank aiming to build sustainable and fair post-industrial societies, generating impact to the ongoing global transformations. I work with the Urban Transformation team, focusing on the development of multi-stakeholder strategies with public administrations and industry. To foster change in policymaking and urban management, I advocate for new avenues of city-making in contemporary digital societies. My personal research leverages digital footprints to study new urban design solutions, with the ultimate goal of retrofitting inner cities for the needs of contemporary life.
I’m also co-founder of SPIN Unit, a transnational urban research network combining art and science to find new, creative approaches to urban studies and advanced data solutions. I’ve been involved in external collaboration as Principal Researcher at Michael Sorkin’s TERREFORM CAUR in New York, Associate at the Spatial Ethnography Lab.
I lead international planning and foresight projects for private enterprises and public administrations to develop analysis and strategies for urban development and city management. Recently I’ve been mentoring at several UNDP events on interaction planning and consulting for the cities of Turku, Tallinn, Turku, the Estonian Ministry of Finance and, together with GISPO, for the Finnish Ministry of Environment together.
I pursue the use academic knowledge to the urban practice. Recently I’m focusing on the mediation of the planning process and understanding how technologies and media are the driver of production of space. Yet my research focused for many years on GIS based analysis. In 2015, when I received focus my interest the ESRI Young Scholar award and in 2016 when I was awarded the Golden globe for digital geography from the Geoknowledge Foundation. In parallel, I am writing a doctoral dissertation on the conceptual framework of Urban Meta-morphology, a method to study the relations between city form and its digital footprint.
My work aims to build bridges between scientific research and urban management, innovating the urban planning practice through digital urbanism and policy making.
